MADISON AREA
TECHNICAL COLLEGE HIRES EUGENE FUJIMOTO
AS DIVERSITY COORDINATOR AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION OFFICER
Madison
Area Technical College (MATC) has hired Eugene Fujimoto as the college's
diversity coordinator and affirmative action officer. In this position,
which reports directly to the college president, he will develop and evaluate
MATC's diversity and affirmative action programs to ensure they meet college
goals and comply with state and federal regulations. These college goals
include diversity in hiring, staff development and curriculum and equity
in student access and achievement.
We
are extremely fortunate to welcome Eugene Fujimoto as our diversity coordinator
and affirmative action officer, states MATC Acting President Rose
Ann Findlen. He brings exceptional experience to this position along
with an outstanding reputation for managing diversity initiatives within
higher education institutions in Wisconsin, California and Washington.
Eugene will
build upon MATC's strong commitment to diversity by offering new leadership
and oversight for our efforts. His experience positions MATC well for
meeting the evolving needs of our district as our state's demographics
change. His work will help ensure MATC continues to serve our district
as 'Your Community's College.'
Among
his responsibilities, Fujimoto will co-chair the Community Relations Work
Team and serve as a key member of the Diversity Scorecard Work Team. Both
of these cross-functional work teams are sponsored and monitored by the
college president.
The Community
Relations Work Team is charged with designing a system that ensures college
staff participate in ongoing interactions with local community agencies
and organizations to allow broader flexibility, enhanced relationships
and a decision-making role in the communities we serve. The Diversity
Scorecard Work Team is part of the college's student success efforts and
strives to improvacademic equity among all students. In addition, Fujimoto
will chair MATC's Intercultural Council, which prioritizes and coordinates
diversity initiatives and activities across the institution.
The changing demographics of the Madison area present opportunities
and challenges for the college, states Fujimoto. It is crucial
that we keep issues of equity, racial justice and social justice at the
core of all we do. If we are able to do this, MATC is uniquely situated
to meet the needs of the changing population and to continue to serve
the community effectively. I am grateful and privileged to have the opportunity
to serve the campus and the community.
Fujimoto,
who resides in Madison, brings more than 15 years of related and progressively
responsible experience in higher education to MATC. Most recently he served
as the assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action and equal opportunity
at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In this position, he provided
university-wide leadership in all matters related to affirmative action,
equal opportunity and diversity for students, faculty and staff.
Fujimoto
also served as the diversity coordinator for De Anza Community College,
Cupertino, CA; director of student retention at Dominican University of
San Rafael, San Rafael, CA; director of the first peoples advising service
at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA; and youth services coordinator
for the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe in Kingston, WA.
He earned
a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara
and a M.S. in applied behavioral science from City University, Bellevue,
WA. He currently is pursuing a doctorate in educational policy studies
with a concentration on race, class and gender at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
MATC
is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System's 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more
than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas
and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all
or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers
instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout
the district.
