MATC District Board Selects Finalists in College President Search; Two Candidates to Visit Campus Oct. 27–29

Madison, WI . . The Madison Area Technical College District Board (MATC) has announced that it has selected two finalists for the position of college president: Dr. Bettsey L Barhorst, current president Hawkeye Community College, Waterloo, IA; and Dr. Ron D. Wright, current president Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Cincinnati, OH. The candidates will visit MATC Oct. 27-29 to meet with staff, faculty, students, donors and local business, government, educational and community leaders.

According to John H. Ashley, MATC District Board chair, “Over the past eight months the board has stayed on schedule in its search for a new president, though our goal always has been to find the best president for MATC rather than to meet a specific hiring deadline.

“I’m pleased to say we’ve been able to narrow our search to two exceptional finalists within the initial timeframe of our search plan,” he states. “We have completed a thorough process of recruiting, screening and interviewing presidential candidates. With demand high and candidates scarce for college president vacancies across the nation, we are extremely pleased to have attracted two finalists of such superb caliber. Dr. Barhorst and Dr. Wright are highly qualified leaders. Both have impressed us with their talent, vision, experience and integrity.”

The college has developed a day and a half schedule for each candidate to meet with various MATC and community groups. An open forum for community members and interested members of the public is planned for each candidate as follows:

MATC Downtown Education Center, Room 240, 211 N. Carroll Street

Wednesday Oct. 27 6 – 7:30 pm Dr. Ron D. Wright
Thursday Oct. 28 5:30 – 7:00 pm Dr. Bettsey L. Barhorst

“The campus visits and forums will provide an opportunity for mutual interaction, learning and assessment,” says Ashley. “The candidates will gain direct experience for the first time with our college, culture and community.” This experience, he notes will help the candidates determine whether the MATC presidency and the greater Madison area is a good fit for them and their professional and personal goals.

At the visit sessions, MATC staff, student and community members will be able to ask questions, interact with and observe the candidates in person. “We are asking those who attend the sessions to complete a feedback form about each candidate. Our board will consider this input carefully as we continue with our hiring process.”

Biographical information about each candidate and their visit schedule follows and also is available on the MATC Website at www.matcmadison.edu.
