MATC STUDENTS COMPETE AND WIN
AT STATEWIDE CAREER SKILLS EXPO

Five students from the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) chapter of SkillsUSA won top awards while four other MATC students placed at the Career Skills Expo held in Madison earlier this month. The statewide event allows secondary and post-secondary students from across the state to compete in more than 50 technical and occupational skill areas.

MATC students placed in six competitions —Diesel, Welding, Prepared Speech, Job Interview, Extemporaneous Speech and Machine Tool. The students competed against the clock and each other.

MATC students who won first place include: Matthew Heacox [Evansville*], a student in the college’s Diesel Equipment Technology Program, who took first place in the diesel competition and Kurt Weber [Hayward*], from the Welding Program, who took first place in the welding category; Matthew Yonkers [Helenville*], from the Diesel Equipment Technology Program, who took first place in both the extemporaneous speech and job interview categories; and Annette Godschalx [Madison*], from the Barber/Cosmetoloy Program, who won first place in prepared speech.

Other MATC students placing in the statewide competition include: Machine Tooling Technics Program students Caleb Borde [Rio*], who took second place, and Jon Vangen [Rio*], who took third place, in precision machine technology. Diesel Equipment Technology student Jared Laeyendecker [Sun Prairie*] took third place in diesel technology and Sonja Kohn [Wyocena*], also a Diesel Equipment Technology student, placed third in prepared speech.

First place winners are eligible to attend the national Skills USA–VICA Summer Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, June 21 through 25.
