MATC STUDENT
RECEIVES TOP NATIONAL AWARD
FROM THE MICROSCOPY SOCIETY OF AMERICA
Stephanie
Kostrna, a 2004 graduate of Madison Area Technical Colleges (MATC)
Electron Microscopy Program, received the Presidential Student Award from
the Microscopy Society of America. The national award is given to only
four individuals (usually graduate level research and beyond) annually
based on innovative research involving light, electron and scanning probe
microscopies.
Kostrnas
research is funded by a National Science Foundation grant for undergraduate
education through the Imago Scientific Instruments company based in Madison.
Her project involves characterization of a new super alloy designed by
Corin Medical for use in hip replacement applications. Her work will help
contribute to the understanding of the interaction between the alloy and
the human body, identifying wear characteristics that may increase a patients
lifetime and reduce post operative complications.
Kostrna,
originally from Stockton, California, moved to Wisconsin in 1992 and graduated
from De Forest High School in 1998. She will attend the annual Microscopy
Society of America conference in Savannah, Georgia, to present her work
at the presidential symposium.
The Electron
Microscopy Program at MATC leads to an associate in applied science degree.
Students learn to operate electron microscopes and related equipment used
in the preparation of biological and material samples for observation
by scanning (SEM) or transmission (TEM) electron microscopes.
MATC
is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems
16 colleges and serves about 50,000 students each year. It provides a
comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult
basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as
customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100
career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and
certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all or
parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction
through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
