MATC RECEIVES
FINAL APPROVAL TO OFFER
NEW CYBER SECURITY DEGREE
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) has received final approval from
the Wisconsin Technical College System Board to begin to offer a new Information
Technology Network Security Specialist Associate Degree program this fall
in an effort to help local businesses combat the proliferation and cost
of computer viruses. In February 2004 alone, computer viruses and worms
attacking the Internet and crippling websites cost businesses up to $83
billion worldwide, according to industry estimates.
MATC
now is accepting applications for this two-year program, which provides
comprehensive instruction related to insuring data confidentiality and
assurance within computing systems and networks. Emphasis is placed on
vigilant security awareness throughout the curriculum.
With
the increasing proliferation of viruses, spyware, worms and hacker intrusions,
organizations today have a need like never before to ensure top-notch
security skills among their IT professionals, states Ken McCullough,
MATCs Computer Information Systems (CIS) departments lead
instructor. Unfortunately, many organizations recognized this need
only after experiencing security issues that resulted in lost productivity
or compromised data. We foresee excellent career growth for individuals
who specialize in computer systems security. Our new program will help
local IT professionals and employers meet this emerging need.
The program
introduces students to computer network threats and appropriate response,
defenses, countermeasures and computer forensics. Salaries for IT security
professionals range from $38,000 to $145,000, depending upon qualifications
and experience.
Individuals interested in learning more about the Network Security Specialist
Associate Degree can call 608.246.6003 for more information.

largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges and
serves approximately 50,000 individuals annually. It provides a comprehensive
curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education
and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee
training. MATC provides training in more than 100 career programs. It
awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers
non-degree courses. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located
in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses
and various other locations throughout the district.
