MATC ANNOUNCES STUDENT REGISTRATION AND RECORDS SERVICES
UNAVAILABLE JULY 9-14 DURING UPGRADE OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

Madison Area Technical College (MATC) has announced that its student administration system, which stores all student registration, enrollment, academic and financial records and information, will be unavailable Friday July 9 through Wednesday July 14. The college will remain open during this period but college employees will be able to provide only limited assistance to students and the public who require information maintained on its student administration computer system.

According to Debra Derr, MATC executive dean for Student Development and Success, the college planned this system transition period during a window in the academic year when student registration activities typically are not scheduled and the college experiences its least amount of student activity.

“Most summer classes began in June and our open registration period for fall degree classes does not start until July 26,” stated Derr. “This transition period allows MATC to upgrade our system with confidence. It is a precautionary measure to ensure the integrity of our student records as we move from the old to the new system.”

MATC staff will be available to answer general questions from the public but will recommend to individuals with more detailed registration needs that they contact the college for these services during the following week. The types of services that will be “on hold” during these four business days will include class registration, class schedule changes, transcript retrieval and inquiries regarding the status of admission applications and financial aid processing.

MATC is currently operating version 7.6 of the PeopleSoft Student Administration System and will upgrade to version 8 in July. Version 8 provides the necessary foundation for the college to offer web-based services such as online registration and grade, transcript and schedule access for students and the public. These web-based services will begin to be phased in during late fall of 2004 with full implementation planned for spring 2005.

“Our upgrade to version 8 of PeopleSoft is an important step for us. While all systems changes are challenging and not to be underestimated, this change should be relatively smooth for us since we have been using the PeopleSoft system for two years and our employees are extremely familiar with its operation,” stated Derr. “We have built precautions and testing into this upgrade to ensure a smooth and successful transition with as little stress and disruption as possible for everyone – our students, public and staff.”

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges and serves about 50,000 individuals each year. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
