MATC Selected as Finalist for
Bellwether Award
Presented by the Community College Futures Assembly
Madison Area Technical College
(MATC) has been selected as a finalist for a Bellwether Award, an annual
award recognizing outstanding and innovative programs and practices
that are successfully leading community colleges into the future.
The award is presented by the Community College Futures Assembly, an independent
national policy forum and think tank for key leaders working on critical
issues facing community colleges.
The organization chooses 10
finalists in three categoriesInstructional Programs and Services;
Planning, Governance and Finance; and Workforce Development. Winners in
each category are honored at an annual assembly to be held January 31
through February 3, 2004, in Orlando, Florida.
MATC is a finalist in the Planning,
Governance and Finance category. The college received the nomination for
its efforts in aligning college planning and budgeting. In September,
Acting President and Provost Rose Ann Findlen, Chief Finance Officer Kevin
Myren and MATC Board Chair John Ashley showcased the colleges work
in this area with a presentation titled Alignment of Planning and
Budgeting: The Boards Role at the Association of Community
College Trustees Convention.
The Bellwether Awards are an
integral part of the Community College Futures Assembly, established in
1995. The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at
the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trend setting programs
that may serve as models for other colleges.
MATC is one of the largest
of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges and serves
approximately 50,000 individuals annually. It provides a comprehensive
curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education
and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee
training. MATC provides training in more than 100 career programs. It
awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers
non-degree courses. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located
in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses
and various other locations throughout the district.
