MATC PERFORMING ARTS
HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR SHADOW BOX

Madison Area Technical College Performing Arts is holding auditions for its first production of the 2004-2005 season, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Shadow Box. Open auditions will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, and Wednesday, September 8, in the Studio Theater, room 206, MATC Truax, 3550 Anderson Street. Roles are available for nine to 10 individuals including four men (one adolescent) and four women (one elderly) to play family members.

Shadow Box, written by Michael Cristofer, draws three distinct family stories into a universal tale of mortality. Set in a west coast hospice, the stories are introduced individually, but as the two-act play unfolds, the stories begin to merge and eventually blend into a chorus that captures the range of thought and emotion for all who struggle with dying. Three families take up residence in private cottages to pass the “last days” with a loved one. The first family introduced is a conventional working-class family. The second family is comprised of a gay couple and the ex-wife of the terminal patient. A mother-daughter relationship is found in the third cottage. Each of the families struggles with different levels of loss, and all aspects of grief are given voice during the course of the play.

Cristofer won both a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play for Shadow Box in 1977. The MATC production will be directed by Michael Lussenden, the college's new communication arts instructor. Lussenden comes to MATC with 20 years of directing and producing experience.

To prepare for the audition: Read the play. One copy is available at the MATC Truax Library on closed reserve and some copies are available for check out through the MATC Box Office beginning August 16. Auditioners should prepare a brief (one minute) monologue or prose piece. Bring your personal schedule to the auditions to check against the rehearsal and performance schedule-availability will play a role in casting. Auditions are open to all MATC students, staff and community members.

Call back auditions will be by invitation only on Thursday, September 9. Dates and times for rehearsals are tentatively scheduled for Mondays through Thursdays from 6:30 to 10 p.m. starting September 13. Friday and possibly Saturday afternoon rehearsals will be scheduled as the production nears its performance dates. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings from October 29 though November 13.

More detailed information on the production or the audition process is available by contacting Michael Lussenden at (608) 246-6479.
