MATC Graduate and Local Business Owner
Robin Roberts Receives Statewide Distinguished Alumni Award

The Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association presented its Distinguished Alumni Award for 2004 to DeForest resident Robin Roberts, owner of Roberts Construction Associates in Madison. Roberts was selected for this statewide honor from nominations of notable alumni submitted by each of Wisconsin’s 16 technical colleges.

This award recognizes Roberts for his significant role in leading the development and funding the upgrade of MATC’s baseball field and for his membership in and service to the MATC Foundation Board.
Roberts, who graduated from Madison Area Technical College’s (MATC) Architectural Technician Program in 1975, founded Roberts Construction Associates in 1981. His company has completed more than 400 building projects, winning five Associated Builders and Contractors “Project of Distinction Awards.”

While at MATC, Roberts was an outstanding student who worked his way through college. He also was an outstanding pitcher for the MATC baseball team and still ranks in the top ten for most batters struck out and for the lowest Earned Run Average among MATC pitchers.

Roberts remains involved with MATC as a charter member and president of the MATC On Deck Club, which supports MATC baseball. He led the upgrade of MATC’s baseball facility, named Robin Roberts Field in 2000, to recognize his role in planning, fund raising and construction management for the project. Roberts Field is used by several community groups in addition to the MATC WolfPack.

Roberts also serves as a board member and secretary of the MATC Foundation. In nominating Roberts for the award, Bob Dinndorf, executive director of the MATC Foundation, said, “I believe Robin represents the ideal technical college alumnus: someone who combines technical knowledge with broad vision and then works hard to develop a distinguished career using that powerful combination.”

The Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association: Represents the 144 governing board members serving Wisconsin’s 16 technical college districts. The Association promotes excellence in trusteeship through member education programs, public policy advocacy, and cooperative efforts between the colleges.

The Distinguished Alumni Award: Is made annually to one exemplary graduate of a Wisconsin Technical College based on: The role a technical college education has played in his or her personal and professional life; the nominee’s professional accomplishments; and, his or her service and commitment to the home college and to the larger community. Nominations are made by local college boards and the selection is made by a statewide member panel.

According to the Association’s executive director, Paul Gabriel, “Our members are volunteer community trustees who really value and honor extraordinary service to the larger community.”

MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College System’s 16 colleges and serves about 50,000 individuals each year. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
