MATC Career Snapshots Seminar
Profiles Technical and Industrial Careers
A four-year education is not
always required to earn a good salary. Many graduates of the technical
and industrial programs from Madison Area Technical College (MATC) are
able to find work with a starting salary between $22,000-$30,000 and an
earning potential of $50,000 and up with two years of college.
MATC will focus on agricultural equipment technology, automotive collision
repair and refinishing, automotive technology, biotechnology, cabinetmaking
and millwork, diesel, electronics, industrial maintenance, machine tool,
mechanical design, printing, welding and veterinary and lab animal technician
careers in an upcoming Career Snapshots to be held on Tuesday, November
18. The free career exploration event will be held at the MATC Truax Campus
located at 3550 Anderson Street in Madison with registration and program
fair from 5:30-6:00 pm and event from 6:00-8:30 pm. Registration for Career
Snapshots is available online at www.matcmadison.edu or by calling 608/246-6239.
The event will offer attendees many hands-on activities, including: a
chance to diagnose a John Deere tractor and an electronic controlled diesel
engine, view four-wheel automotive alignment, participate in a hands-on
auto collision repair, isolate DNA and learn about genetic engineering,
observe woodworking on the latest equipment, construct audio to personal
computer interfaces, design parts using Mastercam Solid Modeling, watch
a demonstration with robots, analyze mechanical part for design strength,
view production to completion of a two-color print job; observe proper
handling of animals, and weld metal. MATC instructors and alumni working
in these fields will be available to answer questions.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, eighty percent of all new
jobs require some post high school education and training, but not a four-year
college degree.
MATC is the source for one- and two-year technical diplomas and
a whole variety of associate degrees offering this type of training.
states David Shonkwiler, dean of the Agriculture, Apprenticeship, Technical
and Industrial Division at MATC.
Career Snapshots is a series of seminars presented by MATC that allows
attendees to participate in an interactive program focusing on particular
career fields. Whether changing careers or simply exploring different
career options, community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
MATC is the second largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems
16 colleges. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal
arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and
activities, as well as customized employee training. MATC awards associate
degrees, vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses.
The college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central
Wisconsin and offers instruction through five campuses and various other
locations throughout the district.
