Japanese Film Festival Hosted by MATC Global Horizons Series

Madison Area Technical College’s Global Horizons Series will host a Japanese Cultural Festival, Saturday, April 12, from noon until 5 p.m. at MATC Truax (3550 Anderson St., Madison). Designed to highlight aspects of contemporary Japanese culture and society, the event will include workshops, performances and film showings throughout the day. All activities are free and open to the public.

The event will feature interactive workshops in which participants can learn about Japanese cultural arts and traditions including bonsai miniature tree sculpting, Ikebana flower arrangement, Japanese calligraphy and origami. Performances include Japanese music, martial arts demonstrations, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, children’s activities and family-friendly animation screenings from the Japanese Film Festival.

This event serves as the culmination of a week-long series focusing on Japan, including a Japanese Film Festival from April 7 through 12, featuring a keynote lecture by Dr. Donald Richie, regarded as the world’s foremost authority on Japanese film. The week also includes a day-long symposium, “Doing Business with Japan,” on April 10. For details on either event, see the Global Horizons webpage.

The MATC Global Horizons Series is an initiative in global awareness education at Madison Area Technical College. The series aims to better prepare students and the community for life and work in a globally interconnected world. This cultural festival is part of the spring Global Horizon Series’ focus on Japan.
