MATC
Career Snapshots Profiles Health Care Careers
Most people recognize
that doctors and nurses are important members of the health care team,
however many other health care professionals play a critical role in caring
for patients.
MATC will focus
on these less well-known health care careers in an upcoming Career Snapshots
on Tuesday, April 8. The free career exploration event will be held at
the MATC Truax Campus, Mitby Theater, 3550 Anderson Street in Madison
from 6-8 pm. Registration for Career Snapshots is available online at
www.matcmadison.edu or by calling 608/246-6239.
Attendees will
learn about the roles of various health care professionals, including:
dental assistants, emergency medical technicians, medical assistants,
medical coding specialists, medical lab technicians, occupational therapy
assistants, optometric technicians, radiographers, respiratory care practitioners
and surgical technologists.
The event will
offer attendees an opportunity to see hands-on activities and lab simulations
in the various career fields. MATC instructors and alumni also will be
available to answer questions.
The health services
sector is one of the fastest growing industries, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The health care industry in Wisconsin alone accounts
for more than 10,000 job openings annually and experts predict by the
year 2008 the industry will have created more than 45,000 jobs. Normally
this would be great news for the states economy, but it has caused
a problem - the need for qualified workers to fill these positions is
rapidly reaching crisis level.
" We graduate
students that provide care for people throughout their life span. The
need to attract workers in the health field due to worker shortages and
the growth of the aging population is making the need for health care
professionals a critical issue. This event is one of many efforts to increase
awareness for health care occupations," says Dr. Abdulcadir Sido,
Dean of the Health, Human and Protective Services Division.
MATC offers less-than-one-year
and one-year technical diplomas and two-year associate degrees in a variety
of health occupations to meet this demand.
Career Snapshots
is a series of seminars presented by MATC that allows attendees to participate
in an interactive program focusing on particular career fields. Whether
changing careers or simply exploring different career options, community
members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
MATC is the second
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC awards associate degrees,
vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The
college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin
and offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations
throughout the district.
