MATC
Takes Literature and Writing Into the Wild
The
wilderness of northern Wisconsin will become a classroom without walls
for two courses being held by Madison Area Technical College (MATC). The
six-day courses will take place May 24-30 at Camp Manito-Wish in Boulder
Junction, Wisconsin. Students can earn three credits in either Literature
in the Wild or Writing in the Wild while taking part
in outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing, hiking and rock climbing.
Students taking Literature in the Wild will study writers
such as John McPhee, Annie Dillard, Joy Harjo, Annie Proulx and Aldo Leopold,
according to John Galligan, the courses instructor. Writing
in the Wild focuses on nature writing. Students will work on nature
essays, poetry and short plays and monologues, says writing instructor
Larry D. Hansen.
This is an educational setting that would make Aristotle proud,
says Hansen. Were going back to nature to think, read, and
write. The outdoors is our classroom.
The cost of each six-day course is $574.90, which covers the cost of tuition
plus six nights of lodging, all meals and recreational equipment. The
college-level courses are open to the public. However, participants should
have completed the equivalent of MATCs English Composition
1 before taking the course.
MATC is one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems
16 colleges and serves approximately 50,000 individuals annually. It provides
a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult
basic education and life enrichment students and activities, as well as
customized employee training. The college serves all or parts of 12 counties
located in south-central Wisconsin and offers instruction through five
campuses and various other locations throughout the district.
