MATC
Career Snapshots Seminar Profiles
Science Careers and College Transfer Options
MATC will focus
on biotechnology and electron microscopy careers and options that lead
to a bachelors degree in an upcoming Career Snapshots on Tuesday,
February 11. The free career exploration event will be held at the MATC
Truax Campus, Room 142 AB, 3550 Anderson Street in Madison from 6-8 pm.
Registration for Career Snapshots is available online or by calling 608/246-6239.
The event will
offer attendees hands-on activities such as isolating DNA and viewing
some highly powerful transmission and scanning microscopes in action.
Participants also will learn how to begin a college career and make connections
with 4-year colleges and universities for bachelors degree completion
options. MATC instructors and alumni also will be available to answer
questions.
According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, continued growth of scientific and medical
research, as well as the development and production of technical products,
should stimulate demand for science technicians in many industries.
MATC offers a
two-year associate degree program in biotechnology to meet this demand.
Biotechnology jobs may be found in public or private laboratories such
as universities, pharmaceutical companies, food processing industries
and companies performing research and development. Some of the job duties
of entry level biotechnology positions include: completing scientific
work, conducting research and development experiments and checking product
performance and characteristics.
MATC also offers
a two-year associate degree program in Electron Microscopy, which is one
of only two programs in the country. The study of electron microscopy
includes the operation and maintenance of scanning and transmission electron
microscopes and related equipment; preparation and interpretation of biological
and material samples for observation, and computer image processing and
x-ray microanalysis. Jobs are available nationwide.
In addition, MATC
offers a two-year associate degree in arts or science. When completed,
MATCs college transfer program generally satisfies the first two
years of general education requirements for various majors in four-year
colleges and universities. Recently, MATC has established new bachelor
degree completion programs with UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, Milwaukee School
of Engineering and Franklin University.
Career Snapshots
is a series of seminars presented by MATC that allows attendees to participate
in an interactive program focusing on particular career fields. Whether
changing careers or simply exploring different career options, community
members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
MATC is the second
largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC awards associate degrees,
vocational diplomas and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The
college serves all or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin
and offers instruction through five campuses and various other locations
throughout the district.
