College to Graduate 1,323
Students at Mid-Year Commencement
Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will graduate 1,323 students at
its mid-year commencement ceremony on Friday, December 19. The ceremony,
to be held at 2 pm at the Exhibition Hall A of the Alliant Energy Center
in Madison, will include graduates from MATCs Madison campus, as
well as its Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg and Watertown campuses.
Randolph resident Rachel Braaksma,
who is earning an associate of arts degree from the colleges Liberal
Arts Transfer Program, will present the graduate address. A graduate of
Cambria-Friesland High School, Braaksma has been on the Deans list
every semester since Fall 2001 and has been the recipient of numerous
scholarships. In addition to her academic achievements, she has been an
active volunteer for a youth choir and the First Reform Church of Friesland.
Upon graduating, she plans to pursue a career as an event and wedding
planner.
Other speakers at the ceremony
will be MATC District Board Chair John Ashley and MATC Acting President
Dr. Rose Ann Findlen.
Of the graduates, 406 will
receive two-year associate degrees or diplomas and 917 will earn one-year
or shorter-term diplomas. Among the colleges more than 100 academic
and occupational programs, those graduating the most students this semester
include: Arts and Sciences, Business, Computer Information Systems, Nursing,
Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Technician.
Ninety-four graduates will
receive academic honors. This honor is given to graduates who have earned
a GPA of 3.75 or higher in courses within their programs of study. The
Special Service Award will be granted to nine graduates. This award is
given to students for their service in student government, clubs and activities,
their demonstrated leadership and initiative in the classroom, and their
awards and accomplishments outside of the college. Twenty-four graduates
are members of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society.
MATC is the one of the largest
of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems' 16 colleges and serves approximately
50,000 individuals annually. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of
technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment
studies, as well as customized training.
