College to Graduate 1,323 Students at Mid-Year Commencement

Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will graduate 1,323 students at its mid-year commencement ceremony on Friday, December 19. The ceremony, to be held at 2 pm at the Exhibition Hall A of the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, will include graduates from MATC’s Madison campus, as well as its Fort Atkinson, Portage, Reedsburg and Watertown campuses.

Randolph resident Rachel Braaksma, who is earning an associate of arts degree from the college’s Liberal Arts Transfer Program, will present the graduate address. A graduate of Cambria-Friesland High School, Braaksma has been on the Dean’s list every semester since Fall 2001 and has been the recipient of numerous scholarships. In addition to her academic achievements, she has been an active volunteer for a youth choir and the First Reform Church of Friesland. Upon graduating, she plans to pursue a career as an event and wedding planner.

Other speakers at the ceremony will be MATC District Board Chair John Ashley and MATC Acting President Dr. Rose Ann Findlen.

Of the graduates, 406 will receive two-year associate degrees or diplomas and 917 will earn one-year or shorter-term diplomas. Among the colleges’ more than 100 academic and occupational programs, those graduating the most students this semester include: Arts and Sciences, Business, Computer Information Systems, Nursing, Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Technician.

Ninety-four graduates will receive academic honors. This honor is given to graduates who have earned a GPA of 3.75 or higher in courses within their programs of study. The Special Service Award will be granted to nine graduates. This award is given to students for their service in student government, clubs and activities, their demonstrated leadership and initiative in the classroom, and their awards and accomplishments outside of the college. Twenty-four graduates are members of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society.

MATC is the one of the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems' 16 colleges and serves approximately 50,000 individuals annually. It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies, as well as customized training.
