Madison Area
Technical College Starts 2003-04 School Year
With Expanded Offerings and Anticipated Enrollment Growth
The new 2003-04 school year starts next week at Madison Area Technical
College (MATC) with expanded offerings and anticipated enrollment growth.
Expanded offerings in the health, manufacturing, science and business
fields will greet the approximate 50,000 individuals who attend the college
each year. The college anticipates an increase this year in its total
full-time equivalent enrollments, which is the number of students the
college serves as calculated by full-time attendance.
MATC counselors
report that many individuals enrolling this semester are returning adult
students seeking retraining. Many of these individuals are taking steps
to improve skills or build new skills because they have been laid-off
or are concerned about losing their jobs due to the slow economy.
In an effort to
help meet the demand for nursing and health care workers, this fall MATC
is accepting 24 additional associate degree nursing students at Truax
and eight additional nursing students at the regional campuses. Next spring
MATC will accept eight more at the regional campuses. In addition to the
nursing students, MATC is accepting an additional 48 certified nursing
assistant students in Madison. To accommodate more students, the college
has added several nursing class sections, including a new evening session.
A one-year Paramedic Program is being introduced this semester, along
with an accelerated Clinical Lab Technician Program. Next year the college
plans to start a new mammography course and is exploring adding sections
in its Medical Assistant Program and Phlebotomy courses. Almost all of
the colleges health-related occupational programs have full enrollments
or waiting lists.
Many of MATCs automotive and transportation-related programs have
full enrollments for the first time in many years. Enrollments are growing
in the colleges Electrical Engineering Technology Program, introduced
just last year, which prepares students to meet the increasing need to
service computers, cellular phones, and wireless services.
Also new for MATCs
technical and industrial offerings is a relocated Machine Tool Program
lab, which offers new machining equipment and an improved space design
for hands-on student instruction.
In addition, this
semester MATC is launching an online version of its Supervisory Management
Program and the colleges Biotechnology and Computer Information
Systems faculty are collaborating to offer a course in a new and important
subject, Bioinformatics, which applies information technology to the management
of biological data.
During this pilot
year for MATC, the colleges Liberal Studies Program is accepting
its first small class of nine dual enrollment students as part of UW-Madison
Connections program. Under this program, a select number of UWMadison
applicants are offered a guaranteed opportunity to finish their undergraduate
degrees at UWMadison after successfully completing two years at
MATC or a UW College. While attending classes at MATC, students are granted
many of the privileges afforded new freshmen enrolled on the Madison campus,
including access to UW-Madisons libraries, recreational facilities
and student unions, and the opportunity to purchase tickets for athletic
events at student rates.
MATC is one of
the largest of the Wisconsin Technical College Systems 16 colleges.
It provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical, liberal arts and
science, adult basic education and life enrichment studies and activities,
as well as customized employee training. MATC provides training in more
than 100 career programs. It awards associate degrees, vocational diplomas
and certificates, and offers non-degree courses. The college serves all
or parts of 12 counties located in south-central Wisconsin and offers
instruction through five campuses and various other locations throughout
the district.
