GED/HSED Orientation

The Orientation is done in two parts, both of which are required prior to taking the GED/HSED tests.

Orientation Part 1: Wisconsin requirements to obtain your GED or HSED

During the orientation, you will be given a math and reading assessment, called “Tests of Adult Basic Education" (TABE). Your results of this test will determine if you are eligible to attend Part 2 of the orientation, or if you will be referred for MATC classes to prepare for testing.

If you take the TABE assessment at the downtown campus, you will still be required to attend Part 1 of the orientation with a copy of your TABE scores. Part 1 of the orientation generally takes 60 to 90 minutes. Once you are prepared to test, you must attend the second part of the orientation before you can take the GED test.

Part 2: Career assessment and employability skills

During part two of the orientation -- which takes between 2 and 2 1/2 hours -- a demographic booklet for testing will be filled out, and career assessments and employability skills will be discussed. If you already have a resume, please bring it with you to be reviewed.

Fees will also be collected at this time:

• Each of the five GED/HSED tests is $10
• The Health and Civics tests for the HSED are $5 each
• The credential fee is $15

MATC does not accept cash. If an agency is paying for all or part of your tests, please bring your portion of the test fees with you, or have a billing authorization on file prior to testing. Payment must be made in the form of a check, money order or billing authorization.

Attending Orientation

No appointment is necessary for the GED/HSED orientations, however you must arrive on time. No late admittance will be permitted.

Remember, you should not attend the second part of the orientation until you are ready to take the GED test.

Ask for a parking permit if you will be driving to the Commercial Avenue campus for your orientation, and please park only in the designated student parking area.

GED/HSED Testing Schedule

• The GED/HSED is administered at the Assessment Center, located in rooms 200 and 217 at the MATC Commercial Avenue Education Center
• If you are under age 18½ or your high school class has not graduated, you must be under a contract approved by your school district. Contact the MATC College Preparedness and Academic Advancement Center (CPAAC) (608) 258-2435 for more information.
• Before you begin testing, you must first complete the Reading and Math Assessment (TABE Tests) and GED/HSED Orientation Sessions. Once you have completed these steps, feel free to come to any of the following sessions at the check-in times listed below.
• No appointment is necessary to take the test. However, you will not be able to test if you arrive late to the session.
• Obtain a parking permit from the Assessment Center Office. Please park ONLY in the designated Student parking area. (City of Madison parking fine is $20.00)
• Photo ID is required at each test, no exceptions (i.e. Driver's License, State ID, Passport).
• All testing fees must be paid before a student takes his or her last test. Please refer to the GED/HSED Orientation schedule for fee information.
