College Transfer Courses
MATC will grant advanced standing credit for courses transferred from accredited colleges. The course must apply to the student’s program, and the student must have achieved a minimum grade of C (2.0/4.0) in the course. Individual divisions or programs may have additional restrictions on transfer credit. Foreign transcripts will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
To see if your credits from a previous school will transfer, download the Credit for Prior Learning information form (PDF, 169KB) and send it to the Enrollment office.
Procedures
For elective credits, the college does not accept transfer courses
which have the same content as courses required for graduation. Such
courses would repeat competencies and would not fulfill the basic
function of electives, which is to broaden the student's educational
experience. In such cases, the admissions/ registration staff may
need to forward elective decisions to the divisions.
The college may accept in transfer any courses meeting the college transfer policy requirements even though the college may not have an identical or similar course on its current roster of approved courses.
Advanced standing credits for college transfer courses will not be granted without an official transcript. An official transcript has the school seal and/or is signed by the registrar/principal/guidance personnel and mailed directly to MATC. To process an application, the Admissions Office will accept unofficial transcripts.
Unofficial is defined as not having the school seal, not signed by the registrar/principal/guidance personnel, or has been in the possession of the applicant. All unofficial transcripts will be stamped or indicated as “UNOFFICIAL” copy. An application will not be processed with an advising/campus copy or screen print from an institution. Since an applicant may apply for several different semesters, photocopies of transcripts are sent to the divisional offices with the application form. The division office will be able to identify a transcript that is an official copy for advanced standing purposes from an unofficial copy since all unofficial copies will be marked with “UNOFFICIAL” copy.
Madison Area Technical College will accept pass/fail credit in transfer under the assumption that a pass grade is a C or better.
Credits toward fulfilling general education requirements may be awarded at other Wisconsin technical colleges either for courses, or for documentable college level learning, or for experiential learning. Such credits, presented in transfer, shall be honored as fulfilling the same general education requirements at MATC. Additional credits awarded for non-general education requirements shall be reevaluated by MATC to determine if, and how, they will be applied toward completion of the requirements of the MATC program.
For a student who has an earned degree from an accredited institution of higher education, a minimum of 15 credits will be awarded toward completion of the general education core in an associate degree program.
