Admissions Assessment
Requirements
Some programs
require testing as part of the admissions process. ACT, SAT, COMPASS
or Asset test results will be accepted to meet Admissions criteria for
specific programs. Certain programs
may waive the testing requirement based on advanced post-secondary
degrees. Please refer to our Programs
of Study for any unique
requirements for Admissions.
Assessment
The Assessment Center, Room A251, is located in MATC’s Commercial
Avenue Center, 2125 Commercial Avenue. Tests administered at the Assessment
Center include: a placement test—COMPASS (see description below), career
assessment, apprentice and HSED/GED tests—high school equivalency tests.
Test scores are kept confidential. Currently there are no charges for COMPASS,
apprentice or career assessments.
Walk-in testing is available
at the Commercial Avenue Education Center; no appointments are necessary.
If you have questions regarding the test, please call the Assesment Center
at (608) 246-5220. Refer to our test
schedules for test dates and locations.
If you plan on attending a regional campus, please contact that campus
regarding the test schedule.
Entry Placement Test: COMPASS
The COMPASS (Computer-Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System)
is an untimed test, which is taken on a computer. The COMPASS test is
an American College Testing program, which includes the assessment of
math, reading and writing skills for course placement.
The purpose of COMPASS is to obtain information about your academic
skills, plans and needs at MATC. The test results are used for advising
and placement into appropriate courses.
After the application and transcripts are received, you will receive
the walk-in testing schedule, a sample COMPASS test and a parking stamp
for the Commercial Avenue Campus Assessment Center. Refer to the available COMPASS
test schedules and study guides for additional information. A COMPASS test is not required if a student already has a bachelor's degree or has taken a college level English or Math class.
Accepted Program Students
Scheduling and Course Placement (Effective spring semester 2006):
Every incoming full- and part-time student who has been accepted into
a one- or two-year program will be required to take the COMPASS or Asset
test. The assessment results will be used to advise and place students
into courses appropriate to their current academic skill levels.
To schedule classes, students are required to complete the assessment/entry
placement test
through MATC or another Wisconsin technical college.
Students are exempt from the scheduling and course placement assessment
requirement only on the following basis:
- You have taken all four sections of COMPASS—Math, Reading,
Writing, and e-Write—within the last 2 years. If you take the
Asset test, you may be required to take the COMPASS e-Write test.
- You have previously taken college-level English and Math courses
and earned a grade of C or above.
COMPASS/Asset scores will be used for advising and appropriate course
placement.
Your Social Security number may be requested for testing. Test accommodations
are arranged for students who have documented disabilities (to schedule,
please call (608) 246-6721). At the COMPASS test sessions, students receive
a brief orientation to student services and campus resources. Depending
on your program, you may be required to take the COMPASS test for placement
into Math and English courses.
