RE: Changes for MATC staff also teaching part-time
Although teaching assignments are exempt from overtime compensation, the Department of Labor recently issued an opinion letter that requires MATC to pay overtime rates for part-time teaching assignments and preparation time if the total time worked by an employee exceeds forty hours per week when combined with regular employment at MATC in a job that currently qualifies for overtime pay.
Due to the additional cost burden associated with this opinion, effective with the upcoming fall semester, the college will no longer be able to provide non-exempt employees with part-time teaching assignments when the combined hours -- including the non-exempt primary job and both teaching and preparation time -- will exceed forty hours a week. Non-exempt employees at MATC include those who belong to the PSRP Union, or are classified as administrative support. Administrators and faculty members are exempt employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
We sincerely regret that we need to take this action because we value the contribution that our full-time staff members have made in their teaching assignments. We feel this resource has been a tremendous asset to the college in broadening understanding of our mission among our employees as well as contributing to the growth and development of the employees and students involved.
