Re: MATC Student Alexander Fortney

Dear MATC Community,

We have lost a promising young student, Alexander M. Fortney who passed away at the age of 22 on Thursday, May 19, 2005, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Madison .

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at 1pm at the Bad Axe Lutheran Church in rural Viroqua (highway 14 west to Viroqua, turn on highway 56 west, proceed about nine miles to County N and proceed about three miles to church).

Alex was enrolled in the Fire Protection Technician Program and was planning to attend the Firefighter Academy this summer. Earlier this year, he was awarded his Emergency Medical Technician certification at MATC. Although he had not yet finished certification to be a firefighter, Alex was already actively involved in the work he loved. He was an intern at the Shorewood Hills Fire Department where he was well liked and had signed on for a second year of internship.

His instructors in the Fire Protection Technician Program admired Alex’s passion for protecting and helping others. Alex always went the extra mile, they say, and he certainly stood out as a dedicated student who was personally invested in his work. Alex was the kind of student that makes faculty and staff proud to work at MATC.

Alex grew up in Madison , excelling in sports, even winning the title of All-City diving champion in 1995. He attended Eagle School of Madison and Madison West High School . Before enrolling at MATC, he attended Graceland University in Iowa for a year.

Alex represented the kind of student who creates a valuable link between MATC and the community. Firefighters from the Shorewood and Mt. Horeb areas, as well as the Fire Protection faculty and staff of MATC will attend his funeral services, bringing EMS and fire engines and law enforcement vehicles to pay tribute to the pursuits to which Alex so proudly dedicated himself.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Alex’s memory can be made to the Village of Shorewood Hills Fire Department . On behalf of the college, a gift has been made to the MATC Foundation Endowment Fund in Alex's memory. The endowment is a permanent source of financial assistance for MATC students.
