Mumps in Wisconsin

Recently, there has been an outbreak of mumps in Iowa that has spread to surrounding states, including Wisconsin . Many of these cases have occurred in college students, including students who have previously received mumps vaccine. Today we were notified by the Madison Department of Public Health of three confirmed cases in the Madison area with other suspect cases pending. All college students and adults should have received two doses of mumps vaccine (MMR). If you have not previously received two doses of vaccine, please contact your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider or do not have access to health care, contact your local health department in the community you reside to schedule an immunization. The city and county health departments have indicated they will immunize college students at no charge. Mumps is an acute viral illness and is spread from person to person through the air or by direct contact with saliva or infected droplets. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain and general feeling of discomfort. Commonly the cheek and jaw area (salivary glands) swells on one or both sides within the first two days of illness. Severe complications are rare; however, mumps can cause inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, inflammation of the testicles, ovaries and/or breasts, spontaneous abortions, and permanent deafness.

The infectious period or time that an infected person can transmit mumps to a non-infected person is from 3 days before symptoms appear to about 9 days after the symptoms appear.
The incubation time, which is the period from when a person is exposed to virus to the onset of any symptoms, can vary from 16 to 18 days (range 12-25 days).

If you are experiencing these symptoms, please contact your health care provider right away.
