District Board Appointment Process

The governing board of Madison Area Technical College is made up of nine persons appointed from within the Madison Area Technical College (MATC) District:

• two employers,
• two employees,
• one school district administrator,
• one elected official, and
• three additional members.

MATC District Board members are appointed by a committee comprised of the 12 county board chairs from the counties which make up the MATC district: Dane, Sauk, Jefferson, Columbia and Marquette Counties; and portions of Adams, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Juneau, Richland and Rock Counties.

Each year, three members are appointed to serve three-year terms beginning July 1. The annual appointment process typically begins in January or February. Board members are not paid except for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

In the appointment process, equal consideration is given to the general population distribution within the MATC district, as well as to the distribution of women and minorities. Consideration is also given to representatives of business and industry as required for employer and employee representatives. NOTE: No two members of the MATC District Board may be officials of the same governmental unit, nor may any district board member be a member of the school board that employs the school district administrator member. All applicants are eligible to apply and be considered for the additional member category.

There are four important requirements all applicants must meet to be eligible for appointment:

1. must reside within the MATC district;
2. must submit a properly completed application/affidavit within 14 days of publication of the official announcement;
3. must submit at least two letters of reference supporting their candidacy; and
4. must attend an appointment meeting/pubic hearing in person and be interviewed.
