Library Instruction/Information Literacy

What We Offer:

Library research instruction sessions covering information retrieval skills and strategies for writing reports and papers, as well as skills to help students manage an increasingly complex world of information. Before the session, librarians consult with the faculty member about the objectives of the session. Sessions can be one class period, part of one period, or spread out over several periods.

Library instruction sessions for program classes covering specific reference tools for those fields and basic library procedures.

Special topic instruction (e.g. critically evaluating Web sites, job-hunting on the Web, searching for images on the Web, specific databases, etc.).

Online tools to supplement traditional library instruction, including learning objects, tutorials, and the information literacy module HOWLER (Help Online With Library Education and Research).

Individual library research appointments with students. Contact Claire Rasmussen at 246-6085 or rasmussen@matcmadison.edu to schedule this service.

For more information about the MATC Libraries instruction program or to schedule a session at the Truax campus, please contact Mark Luetkehoelter at 246-6638 or mluetkehoelt@matcmadison.edu.

Research Guides

The Research Guides have been reviewed by the MATC Library staff for usefulness and reliability in helping our students. They are broken down by MATC program areas and some general topic areas. The Education Research Guides contain resources that may be of particular interest to instructors.

Creating Links to Articles in Library Databases:

Resusable, stable links can be created to a particular article or publication in many of our MATC library databases. These links can then be added to a Blackboard course, webpage, library electronic reserves, or emailed. Database vendors have various names for their reusable links including; durable links, persistent links, InfoMarks, stable URLs, bookmarks, etc.. Anyone who uses a durable or persistent link must have access to the database from which the URL came. Therefore, off-campus users must be authenticated as part of MATC, so an MATC EZproxy prefix must also be added to the database link. Linking to articles in library databases also has the advantages of being copyright compliant and cost effective.

Instructions for how to create stable or persistent links using:

Contact Donna Marconnet, 608-243-4085; dmarconnet@matcmadison.edu for assistance with linking to articles or titles in library databases.
