Effective teams have a strong sense of community that helps them meet their goals.  They trust and rely on each other.  In this workshop you will learn what makes a strong community and develop ideas you can use when you get back to campus.  We will explore these ideas while snowshoeing or hiking through the winter wonderland in Wisconsin.  Play in the snow (hopefully we'll have some) while you play with new ideas about teams and community.

    Learning Outcomes
    * Understand the elements needed to build community amongst a group of people
*Encounter a positive community building experience
*Develop ideas on building strong communities that lead to more effective teams

    Purpose & Philosophy

The Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Student Life Office is designed to provide opportunities and resources for skill development in students.  The Leadership Program is based on the "Social Change Model of Leadership Development" designed, assessed and revised by scholars at the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles.  Their work on this model began in 1993.  The Social Change Model works from the premise that leadership is "a relational, transformative, process-oriented, learned and change-directed phenomenon (J.C. Rost 1991)."  It is believed that leadership should be "purposeful, collaborative, values-based, resulting in positive social change."

Goals of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development

    1. Self-Knowledge - Each student will develop a greater understanding of his or her talents, values and interests, especially as these relate to a student's capacity to provide effective leadership.

    2. Leadership Competence - Each student will develop the capacity to mobilize him or herself and others to serve and to work collaboratively.

    3. Positive Social Change - Students will undertake actions which will help the institution and community to function more effectively and humanely.
