Madison Area Technical College
Madison, Wisconsin
Friday April 7, 2006
The MATC math club had a day-long celebration on Friday April 7, 2006 to celebrate Mathematics Awareness Month 2006. The day included a special guest lecture, a mathematics competition for high school students entitled "WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPER MATHEMATICIAN?", a pie eating contest, and a poster competition for MATC students.
The mathematics competition involved ten area high school students who answered multiple choice questions about pre-calculus mathematics. The competition was adapted from ABC's "WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?", and was back by popular demand from the previous two years. To qualify for the competition, each student had to do well on a preliminary exam taken at his or her school. The score on that exam earned each contestant a proportional number of "lottery tickets." Before the competition began, students took a quiz to earn more lottery tickets. All the lottery tickets were then placed in a can and a new name was drawn for each successive round.
