    Printer-friendly version

Fall Dates: early September – mid-December
    Spring Dates: mid-January – mid-May

    Program Overview

This semester-long program offers students the opportunity to study Spanish language, history, and culture at thePlaza de Espana, Seville International College of Seville (ICS) while earning Madison College credit. While the local language in Seville is Spanish, all classes are in English. No previous study of Spanish is required, but students are encouraged to have studied at least one semester of Spanish before departure.

Spain’s fourth largest city, Seville has been influenced by a rich cultural heritage and benefits from the Mediterranean climate. Bullfights, flamenco dancers, and tapas are all part of the culture in this beautiful and rugged region.

    Course Information

All students are required to take Spanish language courses (8 credits), “Three Cultures: Jews, Muslims and Christians in Spain” (3 credits), and a service-learning course (1 credit). Additionally, participants may select pre-approved business and culture courses that are taught in English. A list of possible courses can be provided by contacting the StudyAbroad[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (Center for International Education).

Students with advanced proficiency in Spanish may be able to enroll in classes taught at the University of Seville in Spanish. Students who attend this university are required to take a minimum of three classes there. Please contact the StudyAbroad[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (Center for International Education )for more details.

    Accommodations and Meals

Two housing options are available while in Seville: students may choose to live with a Spanish family or in a shared supervised residence. Although students are free to choose the option they prefer, they are highly encouraged to live with a Spanish family in order to benefit from the cultural experience. The supervised residence is not like an American dorm; rather, it is an apartment shared by three to five students and is run by a woman, a couple, or a family who may or may not live there. In both options, laundry is done for students.

Regardless of the housing option students choose, three meals per day are provided. Students who have special dietary restrictions should make that known in their application. It is important to understand that meals are quite different in Spain than in the U.S. Lunch is the largest meal of the day and is served between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Dinner is generally served after 8:30 p.m. and is smaller than a typical American dinner.

    Excursions

As part of the program cost, students will experience a number of excursions and cultural activities. Some excursions may be available at an additional cost. Possible excursions may include:

    • Jerez de la Frontera and Valdelagrana beach
    • Córdoba
    • Ronda
    • Overnight trip to Granada

    Cathedral, Seville
