    Global Studies Seminar - June 3-15, 2012

    Program Overview

    This unique opportunity helps participants build cross-cultural skills by working with students from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, and Marburg, Germany. Each year, students from Madison College and Waukesha Area Technical College meet for four days with students from our sister schools of South West College (SWC) and Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule (KKS). The location of this program alternates between N. Ireland, Germany, and Wisconsin. During the years that Madison College students travel to Europe, additional travel days provide the chance to sightsee and explore the local culture.

    This program is open to both students and community members. Student participants are required to enroll in the Global Studies Seminar course.

    Cultural and Educational Opportunity during the Spring 2012 semester, Madison College will offer a 3 credit class called "Global Studies Seminar".  The focus of this class is the business and Marketing of Heritage, however, the content is very flexible and projects can be tailored to be of value to any Madison College student.  The course requires travel to Germany and Austria (June 3- 15) which includes participation in an international seminar held in Marburg, Germany. As  a part of the seminar, students will tour German businesses that are successfully preserving and marketing heritage and culture.

    Students will also have an opportunity to visit various sites in Austria and Germany.  The itinerary for sightseeing will include destinations in Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Marburg.

    Course Information

    Student participants will register for the Global Studies Seminar course (3 credits), which meets once a week for most of the spring semester. Class sessions will involve research, trip preparation, and team presentation work.

    Students will earn Madison College 3 credits - Course #62785, Tues/Thurs 12:30 p.m - 1:45 p.m.

    This course focuses on:

    • the history, culture, business, and social issues of the host country;

    • current trends and issues in N. Ireland, Germany, and the U.S., and how they relate to overall marketing and tourism business strategies;

    • marketing management skills and perspectives to work successfully in the global marketplace; and

    • building cross-cultural skills by working with students from SWC and KKS.

    Accommodations and Meals

    Participants will be staying in double-occupancy hotel rooms during their stay in the host country. Single occupancy is available for an additional fee. Continental breakfast is provided daily. Lunches and most dinners must be paid for by the participants.

    Excursions

    As part of the program cost, students will experience a number of excursions and cultural activities.

    Additional Information

    A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Europe. If you need to apply for a passport, it is advised to allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing.

    This program is led by Madison College instructors, who will accompany participants to the host country as well as conduct pre-departure orientation sessions.
