Resources for Madison College Faculty and Staff

Madison College has many opportunities to help faculty engage international issues inside and outside of the classroom. Cultivating globally competent faculty is key to college internationalization and to support that effort the Center for International Education coordinates several initiatives including:

    Professional Development Workshops

Watch for announcements for upcoming workshops on specific themes such as working with international students in the classroom, health and safety for study abroad, or internationalization of the curriculum. Workshops are frequently scheduled during college convocation dates, but other special events and activities are also scheduled at other times during the year.

    Summer Institute for International Education

Each June the college hosts a multi-day professional development institute on important themes or issues in international education. Open to both Madison College faculty/staff and other educational institutions, these institutes have proved to be valuable opportunities to network with colleagues, engage international issues, and earn teaching recertification credits. Past institute themes have included:

    • Study Abroad and Internationalization of the Curriculum
    • International Education and Service Learning
    • International Student Enrollment and Services
    • Peace and Conflict in the Muslim World
    • Understanding Contemporary China

    Development of Study Abroad Programs

Madison College welcomes proposals from faculty interested in developing faculty-led short term study abroad programs. For many students, short-term programs directly linked to their fields of study are their only viable options for education abroad. Proposals for new faculty-led study abroad programs must be submitted at least two semesters in advance of the dates of travel. Contact the Center for International Education for specific deadline dates each semester. Faculty interested in submitting a proposal should read the Handbook for Education Abroad Program Leaders and see application forms and guidelines below:

Handbook for Education Abroad Leaders (PDF, 2MB)

Guidelines for Faculty Led International Travel Programs (Word Doc, 64KB)

Application Packet for New Faculty-Led International Travel Programs (Word Doc, 351KB)

Emergency Response Handbook for Education Abroad Programs (PDF, 1MB)

    Internationalization of the Curriculum

In today’s globally interconnected world, students in every program of study need opportunities for international exposure. The college strongly supports faculty in all programs and Centers to develop units, modules, or courses to help students draw connections between their field of study and its implications around the world. Courses with sufficient international focus can be tied to the Interdisciplinary Global Studies Certificate which will allow students to earn credit both in their primary program and an additional certificate to demonstrate their global knowledge and skills to future employers. Grant funding is available for international curriculum development – contact the Center for International Education for the most current proposal forms and guidelines.

    Mentoring International Students

Develop a rich international connection right here in Madison! Madison College hosts many international students each year. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in mentoring programs designed to strengthen students’ social and academic connections and provide them with answers to common questions. Some funding is available for group activities and special events with mentors and mentees.

International Conference or Professional Development Travel

All college employee international travel must be approved by the district board. Faculty planning any travel outside the United States should contact the Center for International Education for details on the approval process, deadlines for submitting proposals, and/or advice on appropriate international professional development activities.
