Study in Canterbury, England
Fall Dates: mid-September to mid-December
Spring Dates: mid-January to mid-April
Program Overview
This semester-long program lets students explore British culture, history, and literature at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) while earning Madison College credit. Students are able to take classes alongside British students, and cultural excursions provide insight into England’s rich and varied history.
Canterbury is located 60 miles southeast of London. One of England’s oldest and most historic places, it is a charming city surrounded by lovely English countryside. Students can relive the Norman Conquest, see where Thomas Becket was murdered, and walk along an ancient Roman wall. Canterbury is also within close proximity of beautiful coastline and interesting coastal towns.
Course Information
Students take a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 15 credits. All participants are required to take “British Politics and Society” (3 credits) and either “Survey of British Literature” or “Survey of British History” (each 3 credits); these courses are specially structured for American students. Students will then choose two to three humanities and/or social sciences courses that are taken with British students. A list of possible courses can be provided by contacting the StudyAbroad[at] matcmadison [dot] edu (Center for International Education).
Accommodations and Meals
Participants will live with British families in a home-stay setting, which provides wonderful opportunities to gain firsthand experience with British culture. These families have been chosen by the International Office at CCCU, and students fill out a housing preference form to help match students and families.
Breakfast is served with the host families. However, students are responsible for their own lunch and dinner, which can be prepared at their home-stay residence or bought on campus or in town.
Excursions
As part of the program cost, students will experience a number of excursions and cultural activities. Some excursions may be available at an additional cost. Possible excursions may include:
-
