Why Implement MAAP
After several years of MAAP implementation, data results indicate that students are more successful when placed into courses with the proper preparation. Several years of data is available for Math, Reading and Writing courses that points to better course retention and higher success rates. The research is also available that shows students taking developmental and remedial courses are able to continue on and be more successful in their college level courses than students who did not follow their placement results.
Faculty may choose to implement MAAP for a course if they feel students need specific skills to be successful in that course. This may be determined by collection of course data, as well as faculty observation. Once a course is “MAAPed” a block is put on the computer system to prevent students from registering for courses for which they are not prepared. Data is supplied to departments and centers regarding the retention and success results for courses that are using the MAAP process.
