Learner Development
Mission/Vision
As educators, the Learner Development staff represents the student voice and facilitates collaborative and supportive holistic learning by fostering learner development through access, understanding, guidance, and shared responsibility. It is our desire to create an inclusive environment in which all learners are equal and where all individuals feel as though they are welcome and see Learner Development as partners in their success.

1. Create flexible programs, services and classes that reflect diverse learner needs.
(Addresses College Goal #2 – Opportunities and options for learning reflect the needs of students and clients)
- Learner Development staff will create and enhance virtual student support services to students and the community in face-to-face, on-line and other various delivery options and workshops.
- Flexible learning options and teaching methods will be explored, created and delivered to engage student learning.
- Information literacy is addressed as a learning competency for students.
- Universal design pedagogy will be infused into teaching and offerings.
2. Through collaboration encourage the creation of secure, safe, accessible, and welcoming learning environments that will enhance student success. (Addresses College Goal #3 – All who interact with MATC have positive experiences.)
- Strategies and action plans will be developed to meet the physical space needs that support and enhance the student learning environment.
- Environments (physical and virtual) will foster a sense of community.
- Creation of Learner Success Centers which provides one-stop academic support for students.
- Virtual services/environments will be secure, and education will be provided to learners in order to support their use of these technologies.
- Continue to develop collaborative systems and processes to promote a safe, secure college community environment.
3. Continue to develop and implement programs and services which foster a meaningful college experience. (Addresses College Goal #1 – All students will succeed)
- Create and implement an intention first year of college experience to enhance the learner’s ability to succeed.
- Develop comprehensive career services (career exploration and employment services) which will be available to and support all students, regardless of location.
- Provide integrated and comprehensive advising services including development of college transfer center.
- Support pre-college and transitional programming that enables career growth in students through meaningful pathways.
- Provide comprehensive retention programs and services that address non-academic services which foster student success.
- Work in collaboration with CETL to provide understanding and clarity of Learner Development principles, programs and services in order to further educate the college community.
4. Create health and wellness programs and services which support the retention and success of students. (Addresses College Goal #1 - All students will succeed and #3 All who interact with MATC have positive experiences.)
- Host a college summit to discuss student health care and wellness trends and needs.
- Create strategies and action plans to enhance wellness and health education activities for students throughout the district.
- Explore student health insurance options and identify multiple coverage plans that support students financial and heath care needs.
- Pursue community partnerships that create health and dental clinics for MATC students.
5. Identify and create strategies for Learner Development staff professional growth needs to encourage and foster innovation and continuous improvement. (Addresses College Goal #5 – MATC staffs are innovative and seek continuous improvement)
- Create process to assess the technology skills needed for the effective operation of the center.
- Conduct an assessment of Learner Development staff technology skills and preferences as well as the understanding of continuous improvement principles to determine training needs.
- Work in collaboration with CETL on the development of training opportunities for Learner Development staff.
6. Through collaboration with faculty and staff, develop retention plan and strategies to ensure and foster student success. (Addresses College Goal #1 – All students will succeed)
