Certification
Certification of staff is granted by the Wisconsin Technical College System. Certification requests are not submitted until an individual is employed by a college within this system. The individual does not pay a fee for initial certification or re-certification.
Requirements for Teaching in the Wisconsin Technical College System
Academic instructors must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree with a major (or 30 credits) in the subject area and 2,000 hours of non-educational work experience.
Occupational instructors must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent occupational experience and 4,000 hours of work experience in the appropriate field.

Initial Certification in the System
Most instructors are certified at the provisional level upon entering the system.
Instructors certified at the provisional level are ultimately working toward the standard certification within the WTCS which requires completion of seven education courses.

The initial provisional certification period is three years.
Subsequent periods renew after two years until all education course requirements are completed.
