Focused Interest Groups
Work with a Faculty Advisor to Enhance Your Success
Through a Focused Interest Group (FIG), Transfer U students are matched with a faculty advisor in their area of interest or potential major. Entry-level transfer courses are paired with New Student Seminar, and the instructor acts as the faculty advisor for the students in the classes.
Choosing a Focused Interest Group:
- Choose your FIG by your area of interest or potential major: psychology, sociology, history, etc.
- Or if you are still exploring a major, choose your FIG through a theme-based English 1 or Introduction to College Writing. Some past themes include Banned Books and Censorship, The Internet and Our Lives, The End of Education and Why School?
New Student Seminar:
- A one-credit course paired with an entry-level transfer course
- Acclimates students to the culture of Madison College
- Acts as a vehicle for faculty advising
- Includes topics such as the history and mission of Madison College, the college resources, the college software, college and instructor expectations, and college-wide and program outcomes
Faculty Advising: Your advisor will
- Help you capitalize on your strengths and manage any challenges you find in your first semester
- Help you develop your college pathway
- Act as a guide for your area of interest
- Assist you in choosing your second semester courses
- Act as a referral to Madison College resources
