Compressed Gas Safety

Safe handling

  • Always use a cart to transport gas cylinders.
  • When moving cylinders, the cylinder must be strapped to the cart and the valve cap must be in place.
  • Never lift or move a cylinder by it's valve cap.

Safe use

  • Always check the label to be sure you have the correct gas before using the gas.
  • Always shut the valves off after use.
  • Never turn the valve fully open when using.
  • Wear safety glasses and/or a face shield when handling and using compressed gases.
  • Once a cylinder is empty, it must be marked "Empty - do not use" and placed in a separate storage area (also marked for empty cylinders) away from full cylinders to prevent confusion.

Proper storage
Cylinders must always be chained up, whether it is to the wall, or to the cart they are placed on. The chains must cross the upper third of the cylinder, to prevent it from flipping out of it's chain.

Empty cylinders must be stored separately from full cylinders in an area marked "Empty Cylinders".

Cylinder inspection
Inspect your cylinders daily for any dents, corrosion, leaks, etc. If you find a damaged cylinder, contact your supplier to arrange removal of the cylinder.
