Grinding Wheels

There are three common hazards associated with grinders:

  1. The grinding wheel shattering
  2. Touching the wheel while it is spinning
  3. Burning yourself on the work piece

Grinding wheel safety tips:

  • Read the instructions/manual before use.
  • Always wear safety glasses and a face shield.
  • Remove all jewelry (rings, necklaces, etc.) and ties. Pull back long hair. Roll up long sleeves.
  • Make sure that the grinding wheel speed matches that of the grinder.
  • Never exceed the grinding speed of the wheel.
  • Do not use the sides of the wheel when grinding. Doing so may cause the wheel to shatter.
  • Always make sure the machine guarding is in place and tightened.
  • Tool rests should never be more than 1/4 inch from the wheel.
  • Check the wheel for cracks before turning on the machine.
  • Make sure portable grinders have finished spinning before setting them down.
