Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety

The most popular liquefied petroleum (LP) gases are propane, butane and propylene. These gases serve many purposes. Propane is used to fire gas grills, and to power gas-powered forklifts.

These types of gases are extremely flammable, and can therefore be very dangerous if not handled properly. This gas is also heavier than air, and if released, will travel along the ground.

Remember:

  • LP gas may not be stored inside publically occupied buildings (i.e., MATC buidlings). This includes empty LP gas containers.
  • Wear leather gloves when handling LP gas - it has cryogenic properties that can cause frostbite.
  • Always have a charged ABC fire extinguisher on hand.
  • Check for leaks before and after connecting.
