Classes of Lasers:

  • Class 2 - emits visible but low-powered radiation
  • Class 3 - emits medium-powered radiation that may cause eye damage if eyes are not protected
  • Class 4 - emits high-powered radiation and is the most dangerous type of laser. Can cause severe eye or skin damage.

Some uses of lasers:

  • Laser engraving
  • Laser saw guides

Laser safety tips:

  • Always wear safety glasses that provide protection specifically from lasers. Make sure you can read the controls while wearing your eye protection
  • Never point a laser at yourself or others
  • Read the safety instructions provided by the manufacturer
  • Make sure the laser is labeled with the class type
  • Don't point the beam towards windows or doors
  • If you work with class 2, 3 or 4 lasers, you will need more detailed laser training. Contact the EH&S Office for more information. Currntly, we do not have any class 2, 3 o4 4 lasers at MATC.
