Confined Space Entry

A confined space is a space large enough for a human to enter, is not suitable for continuous employee occupancy, and has limited/restricted entry and exit.

To perform any work in these confined spaces you must have authorized entry, which means you have completed a permit and submitted it to the EH&S Office.

Only those trained in confined space entry may enter confined spaces. For each entry, there must be an attendant, entrant and supervisor on site during the entry.

The following must be done before entering a confined space:

  • The supervisor must contact the EH&S Manager.
  • Complete a confined space permit.
  • Test the atmosphere before and during the entry.
  • Ventilate the space to purge any hazardous substances or asphyxiants.
  • Post the permit at the work site.

For confined space training, contact the EH&S Office at (608) 246-6291.
