Guenette wins 2007 American Poetry Journal Book Prize

Matt Guenette, English instructor, won the 2007 American Poetry Journal Book Prize for his chapbook titled Sudden Anthem, which will soon be published by Dead Horse Press..

Sudden Anthem's poems are diverse, yet they share a theme of self discovery, Guenette said.

"People like to ask what the book is about," he explained. "I don't know if it's about any one thing, but the narrator in most of the poems seems to be trying to make a joke out of something serious and troubling as a way of moving on. The book is also about the habit of finding a voice, trying on different tones and points of view, in order to become and feel alive.

"Mostly I hope the poems are cool, that they're accessible to an interested audience, that they have an energy that can be felt."

Guenette has been widely published in places such as Pindledeboz, Southern Indiana Review, and Passages North. His chapbook of poems, Hush of Something Endless, was published by Ropewalk Press in 2006

Hansen honored for use of technolgy in teaching

Larry D. Hansen, English instructor, received a "Best Practices" 2007 Award by the Greenhouse Exemplary Course Program, sponsored by Blackboard. Hansen was honored, in particular, for use of wiki tools in an online magazine developed by his Newswriting and Reporting class.

Each year, judges for the Greenhouse Exemplary Course Program review entries from colleges and universities around the country and then honor the instructors they feel use technology in a way that is innovative and effective. In 2007, Hansen was among five Best Practice winners, a group that includes instructors from Iowa State University, Florida State University, Capella University, and Southbank Institute of Technology.
