MATC’s English Department has a pre-major program with courses that could lead to a major in literature, creative writing, technical writing, or journalism, for instance.
Careers
An English course may lead to a career. Many journalists, novelists, screenwriters, advertising executives, public relations specialists, and technical writers got their initial idea for a career in a college English course.
The English Department offers two professional writing certificates:
- The Technical Communications Certificate teaches the student how to research, write, edit and publish various types of technical documents. The certificate will provide the student with the training, skills, knowledge and the writing portfolio needed to land an entry-level position as a technical writer in business and industry.
- The Journalism Certificate teaches the student how to report and write news stories that are ethical, factually correct, and compelling. The certificate may be used to aid a student’s attempt to be accepted into a bachelor’s or master’s program in journalism. The Journalism Certificate could also help the student get a part-time or full-time reporting position at a small weekly newspaper or a small radio news station.
