Working with your Instructor
The English Department aims to support the academic development of all students. The Department also recognizes that many students need help outside the classroom. Therefore, English instructors set up a weekly schedule of office hours during which students can meet with their instructors for one-on-one guidance. However, it is up to the student to initiate these meetings by either calling or e-mailing ahead of time, or simply by showing up at the instructor’s office during an office hour. The English Department recommends that students take advantage of these office-hour meetings with instructors as they have proven to be very helpful for students.
An office-hour meeting is one way of creating an effective working relationship with your instructor. Here are other suggestions:
- Ask questions in during class, especially if you are confused about an assignment or a concept presented by your instructor.
- Ask questions directly after class. In other words, if your question is not answered during class, or if you just didn’t ask it in class, go up to your instructor after class ends and ask the question.
- Be respectful at all times. The best working relationship between an instructor and student is one that is based on respect.
- Participate in class. Instructors highly value class discussions based on informed opinions by students.
- Address any negative attitudes immediately. In other words, don’t let a negative thought simmer. If you have a concern about the instructor’s teaching style, or about another student, meet with the instructor privately to discuss your concerns.
- Show up!!!! Be present both physically and mentally in class. Instructors appreciate a student who is eager to learn and shows it through preparation for each class period.
