Class Schedules
All Electron Microscopy courses (numbered 636)
meet between 2:30 and 5:20 for all four semesters. Several of the EM courses
require an additional three hour laboratory. To facilitate this requirement, 13
three hour laboratory sessions are run each week. These occur between 8:30-11:30
(M-F), 11:30-2:30 (M-F) and 5:30-8:30 (Tu, W, Th).
Your laboratory section is selected during the
first or second day of class. These laboratory sections are shown in color on
the schedules that you can "click-on" to observe.
This schedule was designed to facilitate
student part-time employment. Some students work mornings and take evening labs.
Others schedule morning labs and work evenings. Thus, we have class schedules
which maximize part-time job flexibility. We also have several students who
obtain paid internships during the summer or during the third and fourth
semesters.

Registration Information
Financial aid applications are available from
the Financial Aid Office at Truax or at any Campus office. Students with a
signed award letter on file in the MATC Financial Aid Office may defer fee
payment at the time of scheduling by signing a credit agreement. If an award
letter is not on file, a $100.00 payment is required to sign a credit agreement.
To receive financial aid, individuals must be
formally admitted into an associate Degree, College Transfer, or a one- or
two-year Technical Diploma program. Financial assistance is based on financial
need and enrollment in at least six credits in one’s program of study. Financial
aid checks will be distributed after the first day of classes.
Students must reapply for financial aid each
school year. January 1st is the first day a financial aid application may be
completed for the first semester of the next academic year.
Students accepted in the program will be
notified by mail when to register and schedule classes. Registered means you
have enrolled in specific classes and have paid fees or made arrangements to pay
fees. You may be registered and not be formally admitted in a specific program.
Registration after July 1st must be done through the Arts & Science Division
Office (Room 246). Bring your transcripts to this office and you will be
registered for the needed classes.
The counseling center provides many services
including:
- Assessment/Orientation
- Educational Planning/Academic Advising
- GED/HSED Counseling
- Personal Counseling with Referral to Area
Agencies and College Services
- Study Skills, Stress Management, Managing
Finances and Time
- Transfer Tips
- Housing
Madison Area Technical college values
diversity. The active recruitment and retention of minority students promotes
the college’s mission to provide innovative leadership in a changing global
market place and to ensure accessible quality education to all current and
prospective students.
The Minority Student Services Office provides
an array of support services which include: assistance with financial aid and
admission application, registration, educational and career planning, personal
counseling, and tutorial and other referral services to meet individual needs.
Support services such as tutoring , note
taking, interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing, tape recording of
textbooks, special test taking arrangements and counseling are available to
students with disabilities. Services are designed to enhance the student’s
educational opportunities. Persons who wish support service should contact
Transition Facilitator at their earliest opportunity. Documentation regarding
the disability must be provided to be eligible for support services. A special
information handbook for students with special needs is available upon request.
Student seeking part-time employment are
encouraged to access job information via the Job Placement terminal located near
Room 159A.
The MATC Foundation provides scholarships
opportunities for students. A complete guide can be obtained in Room 11,
Administration Building. Deadline for fall is the last Friday in September and
for spring is the last Friday in January. In addition to scholarships through
the MATC Foundation, some sponsors may give scholarships or financial help to
students.

Employment Sources
Graduating EM students are presented with a
large variety of employment opportunities crossing many industries. All students
completing the program with reasonable grades and willing to relocate have no
problem obtaining excellent employment opportunities with great potential for
additional professional growth beyond the entrance level positions. Some of the
potential opportunities are summarized:
- Microelectronics:
- IC computer chip manufacturers have hired
many of our students (our largest single employer) and their need will continue
well into the future. Also manufacturers of hard drives, electronic sensors
and other small electronic components are potential employers.
-
- University
Electron Microscopy Centers:
- Universities have extensive microscopy
facilities and our students have obtained positions in this setting. Work here
involves all aspects of microscopy including both material and biological
sample preparation.
-
Consulting
Firms:
- There are many EM consulting laboratories
which do work for larger corporations and institutions. We have placed
graduates in such laboratories and expect this to continue to offer our
students opportunities.
-
Electron
Microscope, X-ray Systems and Related Equipment Manufacturers:
- Companies engaged in the electron
microscopy market require application specialists, sales staffs and service
groups. Thus, such companies present a variety of different occupational
opportunities.
-
Hospitals:
- The medical profession makes extensive use
of electron microscopy in clinical applications and especially in larger
research related hospitals.
-
Materials
Manufacturers:
- Industries involved in manufacturing such
products as polymers, chemicals, adhesives, interfaced structures, ceramics,
fibers, coated films, etc. use electron microscopy for quality control,
research and product failure analysis.
-
Metallurgy
Laboratories:
- Companies engaged in metal products ranging
from materials development to finished castings, rolled stock, forgings, etc.
routinely use electron microscopy for quality control and failure analysis.
-
Others:
- Many other industries such as
pharmaceuticals, mined geologic products, powder products, forensics
laboratories, etc. are potential employers. The list of products which might
require electron microscopy is both extensive and varied.
We have spent a large amount of time and effort in establishing a large data
base of potential employers for our graduating students. Our students have taken
jobs with companies all over the United States such as:
- Baxter Healthcare, IL
- Gatan Inc., PA
- Intel Corporation, AZ
- Kevex, WI
- Leeds Precision Instruments, MN
|
- Mayo Clinic, MN
- Micron Technologies, ID
- Motorola, AZ
- Oxford Instruments, MA
- SEMATECH, TX
