    Madison College School of Academic Advancement provides opportunities for individuals to review or improve their basic education in most academic subject areas and get help with study skills, basic computer literacy skills, job seeking skills and prep for high school completion options. Individualized, small and large group and computer-assisted instruction are provided at learning centers and in classrooms. Instructional materials are available onsite to help students achieve their academic goals. Semester-long and modular short courses are offered during the day, evenings and on weekends to fit your schedule.

    The Downtown Education Center (DTEC) Bookstore stocks required textbooks and supplies for classes held at the DTEC, Continuing Education courses, and Academic Advancement programs. Because of limited retail space, the DTEC Bookstore does not routinely stock non-required texts or items. The DTEC Bookstore sells duplicated guides and packets.
     

    Bus Passes, Madison Metro

    The Bus Pass is your ticket to ride Madison Metro buses when you are enrolled at Madison College, with the exception of Routes 80, 81, 82 and all Metro Special Event Shuttles. A new Metro Bus Pass is needed each fall and spring semester and summer session. You will need to show BOTH your OneCard and your Bus Pass to ride Madison Metro Buses.

    The Carroll Street Cafe is located on the second floor at the Downtown Education Center. The operation is open for the breakfast and lunch meal times and offers a menu that features daily entrees, a deli station, pizza slices, salads, snacks and beverages.

    The Child and Family Centers provide and atmosphere of warmth, security and respect. The Centers are places where each child is recognized as a special, unique individual. Child care is available to children of students and staff of Madison Area Technical College.

    Madison College Continuing Education  is committed to promoting and providing a variety of non-credit courses throughout the greater Madison area and Dane County. Madison College is able to offer these courses, which include nontraditional offerings not usually associated with a formal classroom setting, with the cooperation of school districts and community organizations throughout the district. Courses are offered at Madison College campuses and facilities, public schools, senior centers, neighborhood centers, libraries, and area churches.

    Madison College Counseling Services offer a range of professional services for students needing assistance with academic and career issues, personal concerns, interpersonal issues, conflict management, and crisis intervention. Services may be offered in the form of individual, and/or group meetings depending on what best matches your needs. Appointments recommended.

    English as a Second Language

    Adults whose native language is not English can attend classes at Madison College to improve their English oral, reading and writing skills. The goal of English as a Second Language (ESL) is to enable adults to communicate in English in day-to-day life and work situations. To help achieve this goal, students work both in structured classroom and lab settings. Instruction includes an array of curriculum utilizing audio, computer, workbook and conversational materials and some off-campus activities (such as fieldtrips).

    GED Program Instructional Information

    Instructional support is available for individuals who need to brush on basic academic skills before taking one or more of the GED tests. Instruction and practice tests are provided in five content areas that make up the GED exam: language arts, writing; science; social studies; language arts, reading; mathematics. The standardized GED tests are given on a regularly-scheduled basis at sites throughout the Madison College District. A nominal fee is charged for each GED test

     

    High School Equivalency Program (HEP)

    Madison College’s HEP program is a non-residential program that provides instruction and related educational support services, in collaboration with regional campuses, to eligible migrant and seasonal farm workers residing in eligible south central Wisconsin. These services will enable successful participants to obtain a secondary school credential (GED/HSED, or high school diploma) and to obtain career and/or post secondary educational counseling and placement, as appropriate.

    Lockers

    Lockers at the Downtown Education Center are available for FREE RESERVATION by students enrolled in the current academic term.  To reserve a locker, students must present a photo ID to the Student Life Office.  Locker reservations must be renewed each semester or your contents will be removed and discarded.
    All Downtown lockers are equipped with a combination padlock; students will receive the combination at the time the make the reservation.  Special locks are available for visually impaired students; just ask at the time of reservation.

     

    Massage Clinic

    Students in the Therapeutic Massage Program staff and operate the Madison College Massage Clinic. Located on the downtown Madison campus, the clinic offers massages by appointment to the public in the spring (beginning mid-March), summer and fall (beginning in October). There is a small fee charged for full-hour massages. In addition, students offer free chair massages a few times during the year.

    Writing Center

    The Writing Center's primary mission is to help members of the Madison College community become more effective, confident, and successful writers. Through face-to-face tutoring, online conferencing, and group workshops, the Writing Center offers guidance at any stage of a writer's process, from prewriting to drafting to editing. Our goal is to provide writers with transferable skills that will help them not only on paper, but also on future assignments. Thus, the Writing Center tutors do not proofread or evaluate papers. Rather, we work collaboratively with writers, reading student texts and offering questions and suggestions to help guide revision.
