Transfer Credit (Advanced Standing)

    Madison Area Technical College will grant advanced standing based on demonstrated/documented college-level, experiential or military learning. Advanced standing is credit granted toward the completion of a particular degree/diploma. The total for all forms of advanced standing cannot exceed 75 percent of the credits required for graduation.

    At Madison College, advanced standing may be obtained by the following methods:

    1. High school articulated courses
    2. Youth Apprenticeship Program
    3. College transfer courses
    4. Documentable college-level learning which could include formal training or testing from a variety of sources
    5. Experiential learning which is college-level learning which takes place outside of the classroom.

    Prior to submitting this form, please run a Academic Requirements Report (program students only) and/or a Transfer Credit Report from your myMadisonCollege Student Center. Review these reports to confirm which transfer credit has already been granted.

    Electives

    For all Madison College degrees, up to six credits of electives shall be granted for any college-level learning.

    Program Changes

    For program-to-program transfers within the college, general education and elective credits will automatically transfer to the new program unless the receiving program has specific grade restrictions. Absent such restrictions, grades of D will transfer.

    For program credits other than general education and electives, a program-to-program internal transfer decision on advanced standing will be made on a case-by-case basis by the receiving division regardless of grade.

    Persons who receive advanced standing for program courses will be allowed to carry this credit into a new program as elective credit.

    If a student fails a course at Madison College, the student may complete the graduation requirement by taking an equivalent course at another college and transferring the credit. This is the only advanced standing method which is allowed to replace a course in which a grade of F is earned. The Repeated Course Policy does not apply in this case.

    Appeal

    In the event that a student is not satisfied with the award of credit under these Advanced Standing policies, he/she has the right to one appeal. The appeal should be made in writing to the appropriate administrative dean within 30 days of receiving notice of the advanced standing decision. The decision of the Dean is final.
