Construction of the three-story Health Education Center is a month ahead of schedule. Crews are roofing the building, framing doors and windows, creating stairwells, and partitioning off the interior rooms. The L-shaped classroom building is going up at Anderson and Wright streets and will house medical programming and a community clinic when it opens in 2013.

Workers are also installing pipes to connect the building to the geothermal field that will provide ground-sourced heating and cooling. The College’s first geothermal field is located across Anderson Street at the Truax soccer field. Drilling rigs are boring 300-feet deep wells to create an underground network of pipes to channel geothermal heating and cooling to the Health Education and Protective Services buildings. Geothermal energy, a key sustainability initiative in the College’s Smart Future Building Plan, is expected to result in significant fuel savings. Drilling will continue through the spring, which means the WolfPack soccer team will use other facilities for the upcoming season. But the short-term inconvenience will pay off in the long run because a smooth, new soccer field will be built right on top of the subterranean heating and cooling system.
