    College Terminology

    Sometimes, it may seem that college terminology is a completely different language! One key to being successful at college is to learn the college lingo. Here is a list of must-know terms:

     

    A

    Advanced Standing

    Credit granted toward the completion of a particular degree/diploma based on demonstrated/documented college-level learning. You may be eligible for advanced standing in several ways: CLEP or other exams, prior college credit or credit for work experience. For more information refer to the Advanced Standing Academic Policies.

    Add/Drop Period

    During the first 14 calendar days of the semester (first 7 days of summer semester), students may transfer 100% of the fees from a dropped class toward an added class only if the add and drop (SWAP) are done in person and at the same time. For more information review the MATC Refund Policies.

    Articulation Agreement

    Formal agreements with high schools and colleges that enable transfer of partial to full credits toward programs of study at Madison College.

    Associate Degree

    A degree awarded upon completion of a prescribed two (2) year program of study. Madison College offers the following associate degrees: Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Applied Ares, Associate in Arts (Liberal Studies) and Associate of Science (Liberal Studies).

    Audit

    Official enrollment and attendance in a class for no grade or credit. An auditor must meet attendance requirements, participate in classroom work and complete assignments, but may not participate in examinations and evaluations.     B

    Bursar's Office

    Office that works with student payments, refund and financial aid checks, payment plans and tuition policies.

    C

    Concurrent Enrollment or Concurrently Enrolled

    Enrollment in a course that a student is required to take simultaneously in order to enroll in another course.

    Conflict Management Services (CMS)

    A service provided by the Counseling Services office which helps students with student conflicts, concerns or complaints.

    Co-requisite

    A condition of enrollment consisting of a course that a student is required to take simultaneously in order to enroll in another course.

    Credit

    A unit by which an institution measures its courses. The number of credits assigned to a course is determined by the number of class hours per week.

    Curriculum

    The entire body of coursework within a program.

    D

    Degree Audit

    A document that reflects requirements completed and those needed to fulfill degree requirements for graduation in a program of study.

    Dismissal (Academic)

    A status caused by low academic or progress performance. The dismissed student may not continue at the college without approval for reinstatement.

    Dropping a Class (Class Withdrawal)

    An official action take by the student or instructor to terminate enrollment in a class. For more information concerning impacts and timing of class withdrawal refer to the Course Withdrawal policies.

    Enrollment

    The point at which a student has completed registration and has been placed in the class. Classes for which a student has been placed on a wait list are not counted toward enrollment.

    F

    Faculty

    Instructors of college classes.

    FAFSA

    Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form must be completed for students to be eligible for financial aid. You should apply by April 15 of the year preceding enrollment in school. For more information visit our Financial Aid web site.

    Full-time Student

    A student taking twelve or more class credits in a regular semester.

    General Requirements

    Courses designed to provide general knowledge and skills to promote educational success.

    GPA

    Grade point average. For more information on the calculation of GPA, review our Grading policies.

    I

    Incomplete

    A grade of incomplete may be given if a student has done passing work and because of illness or a major cause beyond the student's control fails to complete the class requirements. Incompletes must be made up by the end of the next semester or the grade may be changed to an F.

    Invoice

    An itemized listing of the cost of classes registered for and related fees. Please note the payment due date of the invoice, as courses may be dropped if they are not paid on or before the due date.

    M

    Matriculation

    A status which indicates that a student has complete the formal admissions process and may register for classes based on their assigned scheduling date.

    P

    Part-Time Student

    Any student enrolled in fewer than 12 credits. However, students enrolled in six or more credits can still be eligible for some financial aid.

    Prerequisite

    A condition of enrollment that a student is expected to meet in order to demonstrate current readiness for enrollment in a course or educational program.

    Probation

    An indication that performance is below standard because of academic or progress deficiencies; a trial period in which a student is permitted to redeem failing grades or deficient units.

    R

    Registration

    The process of selecting classes each semester. It is important to secure class registration through payment or arrangements to pay by the due date identified on the invoice. Verification of a correct address should be done during each registration.

    Student Development Center

    A center consisting of the following services/offices: Counseling Services, Multicultural Student Services, Advising and Career Resources (ACR) and Disability Resource Services (DRS).

    Study List

    A document reflecting a student's schedule of classes in a semester including dates, times and room numbers.

    Transcript

    A student's record of classes completed and grades received.

    Timetable

    The listing of classes offered for a semester. This may also be referred to as a class schedule. Online search facilities are available by selecting Search Courses from the Madison College homepage.

    Withdrawal

    Students at the college level can choose to stop attending a class. However, the student must officially notify the college of a withdrawal from class, and, depending upon the time of the withdrawal, may or may not receive a refund.
