INTO THE GRISLY WORLD OF SAW
Filming of 'Saw V' set to begin in March to carry on the twisted legacy of Jigsaw

By MATT HENDRY

“Saw” has become a Halloween pastime for the last three years. Before the series came to be a thrilling time over the Halloween season, it was a short film to pitch the concept to Lions Gate Films.

The original “Saw” was the first introduction to the characters and the plot was a gruesome one. We enter the series in an industrial sized bathroom with three main characters, Adam (Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) chained up, and Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) on the floor with blood all around him. Then reality caught up with them on how they got there in the first place.

Flashbacks ensued of past victims of the Jigsaw Killer. All of them except for one had all ended in the victim’s death. Amanda (Shawnee Smith) had escaped from her demise, but just barely.

She was in a “reverse bear trap” on her face and another person was in the room with her. He was rumored to be dead, by the videotape with Billy the Puppet debriefing her on all that is happening to her, telling her that the only chance to escape is to “get the key in the stomach of your dead cellmate.” She did as she was told but there was one problem, her “cellmate”
wasn't dead. He had been doped up on an opiate overdose and after she got the key, he truly was dead.

Zepp Hindle, an orderly in Dr. Lawrence Gordon's hospital, kidnapped Larry's family as instructed by Jigsaw as a slow acting poison coursing through his body slowly deteriorates his condition.

It was evident that he wanted to play “by the rules” to get the antidote for the poison.

In the end of the first installment, Larry cuts off his foot after receiving a phone call that Zepp is trying to kill his family. After Larry leaves the room in an effort to get help, Jigsaw gets off the floor and tells Adam, “the key to those chains are in the bathtub.” But Adam realizes that the keys went down the drain. Jigsaw slams the door and shouts “Game Over!” Adam's screaming can be heard over the credits of the film.

“Saw II” has its own twists and turns. Here you find that the victims are trapped in a house breathing a deadly nerve gas and they only have 2 hours to live. However, the doors to the house will be unlocked in 3 hours. A familiar face is among the victims. Amanda is back, and this time she added her own twists to the trap.

Jigsaw gets caught, but that is just a part of his plan. He wanted to lead Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) to him and just have a “chat” for the better of two hours. Jigsaw kidnapped his son, Daniel (Eric Knudsen), and if the detective calmly chats with Jigsaw, he will find his son in a “safe, secure state.”

While the monitors over in the opposite room are playing out the victims demise in the not-live feed, a timer ticks down the time. The time that the chosen few have to live. The detective gets furious with Jigsaw and starts beating him up to get Jigsaw to take him to his son. Jigsaw agrees once the detective inserts a gun into his mouth, screaming “take me to my son.”

Jigsaw takes the detective to the right house and gives the detective the key to get in. Walking over the dead bodies of the victims, searching for his son, Eric stumbles on the place of the first serious death trap, with Amanda in a disguise, waiting for him.

That leads to “Saw III.” The third installment of the series starts off with Detective Eric Matthews in the bathroom, chained to a pipe. Jigsaw's condition is deteriorating and enlists the help of Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh). Unwillingly, as she is set up in a trap, the doctor helps. All the while her husband Jeff (Angus Macfayden), is set up with tests of his own.

Successful at the tests, Jeff breaks free and finds Amanda pointing a gun at his wife. He was given a gun of his own at the start of the final test and shoots Amanda in the throat. Jigsaw asks Jeff for forgiveness and says that the test is just the start of something even bigger. Jeff says, “I forgive you” to Jigsaw, after cutting Jigsaw's throat with a bone saw.

“Saw IV:” With Jigsaw and Amanda dead, who is going to carry on the tests and traps?

“Saw V” is scheduled to start filming on Mar. 17, with an expected release of the film on the Friday before Halloween, Oct. 24.
