New Employee Information

Leaves of Absence

MATC attempts to work with the personal needs of employees and their families through a number of leave of absence provisions. These are described in detail in the collective bargaining agreements and administrative benefit plan booklet. Some leaves are mandated by state or federal law or the collective bargaining agreements; others are optional and are granted only when the needs and interests of the college can continue to be met. Consult either a supervisor or the Human Resources Department for advice regarding leave provisions.

Family and Medical Leaves

Certain employees may be eligible to take unpaid family or medical leave under federal or state law. Various types of paid leave may also be substituted in some circumstances for family or medical leave. It is important to specify when a leave should be considered as family/medical leave, because in many instances paid fringe benefits will be maintained. The provisions of the state and federal leave laws are very complex; contact the Human Resources Office to request specific information if you believe you may qualify for leave under these provisions.

Wisconsin law allows employees who worked at least 1000 hours in the previous year to take the following unpaid leaves in a calendar year:
1. Up to 6 weeks for the birth or adoption of a child.
2. Up to 2 weeks to care for a child, spouse, or parent suffering from a serious health condition.
3. Up to 2 weeks for an employee to care for his/her own serious health condition.

Federal law allows employees who worked at least 1250 hours in the past year to take up to 12 weeks of leave in a year for one or more of the following reasons:
1. The birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
2. To care for a child, spouse, or parent suffering from a serious health condition.
3. To care for his/her own serious health condition.

Generally, employees needing family leave should request leave as far in advance as practical. Medical certification will be required in many cases. Contact Human Resources for assistance in planning and applying for leaves under the family/medical leave acts.
