What is WIDS? MATC WIDS training Workshop Participant Comments

WIDS stands for Worldwide Instructional Design System.  This system integrates theory and practice in instruction into a practical model.  For more complete information please assess the WIDS homepage http://www.wids.org

Why use WIDS?  This instructional design system provides you with the groundwork to determine what you want to accomplish before deciding how to accomplish it.  You can better organize and design instruction when you know the end result.

MATC WIDS inhouse training:

In house MATC training in WIDS can be completed in two ways:

  1.  WIDS Designing and Assessing Workshops
    • Three different times a year, these workshops are held at the Truax Campus at MATC: once in May after the end of the Spring semester, once in early August, and once during faculty preparation/curriculum week in January.  Other workshops are arranged upon request.
    • These workshops are 40 hours in length.
    • During the workshop, you will learn about performance based instruction, instructional design terminology, the theories behind a systematic approach to designing instruction, and practice using the WIDS software.
    • Facilitators assist you in developing your curricular materials for a course of your choice.
    • These are hands on workshops with a small amount of presentation by the facilitator(s) and lots of time for you to develop your own course with facilitator assistance.
    • These workshops can be taken for Continuing Education (Certification #50) credit, for graduate credit and for undergraduate credit through the University of Wisconsin  Platteville.
    • The brochures regarding these workshops are sent out by the Human Resources office approximately one month before the workshop dates.
  2. WIDS Instructional Design and Planning (an online course)
    • In this course you will learn about performance based instruction, instructional design terminology, the theories behind a systematic approach to designing instruction
    • You will develop your own curricular activities and send them to the instructor for review.
    • This course does not cover the software application program.
    • This course can be taken for continuing education credit only.
    • You will need access to a computer with internet access and an email address in order to take this course.

Workshop Participant Comments:

Former participants in these workshops have made these kinds of comments in their workshop evaluations:

  • "The value of the class goes beyond just the course I put on WIDS. It is a way of thinking and executing. WIDS has provided me with a step by step action plan to teach my class. Better yet, as I need to make adjustments to the class, all I have to do is pop in my disk, make and save the change and I am set for the next semester. As a part time instructor, the value of having a class laid out, utilizing the expertise of the full time staff is priceless.”
  • "This was the most useful workshop I have attended. WIDS is more powerful than I every imagined.”
  • “It was hands on—time for show and do. This is a format that works well for me and my learning style"
  • "I could not imagine attempting any of this without the help provided during the workshop”
  • “Very user friendly software, will use all information in teaching.”
  • “A very complete and flexible instructional design package.”
  • "I have always known what I did in the courses I taught, and had a general conception of why. This course helped me not only to solidify the why, but to justify it. Thanks!”
  • "The instructors were very patient and helpful. They were willing to give lots of suggestions and did not mind going over things many times.”
